10 Weirdest Cult Albums You Need To Hear

1. Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefhart

Any band worth their salt have been known to engage in more weird music from time to time. From the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Van Halen, every band willing to reach beyond their comfort zone has tried their hand at making music that's a little left-of-center. You may think you've heard weird, but the most outlandish rock music in the world ain't got s**t on Captain Beefheart.

Originally coming from a blues and R&B background, Beefheart and the Magic Band created Trout Mask Replica as one of the most deliberately messy artistic expressions ever made. Under the direction of rocker and all around weird guy Frank Zappa, Beefheart worked diligently to make every sound on this album, which sounds borderline incoherent from one track to the next. For any normal musician, something like this would be incomprehensible, but the more you sit with this album, the more it seeps into your skin.

Yes, this album has no business actually being so amateurish, but once you are willing to take the journey with Mr. Beefheart, all of the lunacy actually comes together to make a little bit of sense. This record might not be anywhere close to something like Led Zeppelin IV or Abbey Road, but the sheer wild factor alone has earned this record a place in rock history.
