10 Weirdest Cult Albums You Need To Hear

6. Zaireeka - The Flaming Lips

Anyone familiar with the Flaming Lips knows that you're going to be getting into something weird with every release. From their more accessible material on songs like "She Don't Use Jelly" to the grand conceptual ideas present on something like Yoshimi, the band will take every sonic risk they can so long as it suits the songs they're writing. While fans are willing to go the extra mile for the Lips, Zaireeka is a bit of a different animal entirely.

Granted, the record is pretty much your standard Lips affair, but the weird part comes in with the execution. Long before streaming services or even digital downloads became available, Zaireeka's presentation on CD came with 4 different discs. For your average fan, it just seemed like the band were taking on a quadruple record, but this was actually one flowing album available across 4 discs.

You could listen to them one at a time, but to get the full experience of the album, you would need to have 4 different CD players playing each disc at the exact same time. It may have been way too complicated for some fans to digest, but once you sit down and listen to Zaireeka in full, it's an enjoyable Lips record from back to front. Some may have seen it as pretentious, but this new way of listening to music was still a novel concept for its time.
