10 Weirdest Replacement Members In Rock History

6. Dave Navarro - Red Hot Chili Peppers

For a band that has been in the game for this long, you practically need a score card for how many people have been in the guitarist slot for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Though the whole thing started with Hillel Slovak behind the fretboard, the sweet spot never really came until John Frusciante came into the fold, bringing with him the melodic sensibilities that were missing from the group. With success comes fame though, and John was not having any of it once the band blew up.

After John quit the band and went down the rabbit hole of addiction, the Peppers were in search of a new guitarist and landed on Dave Navarro, which was definitely a change of pace from Frusciante's funk chops. Being much more of a shredder than Frusciante, Navarro's only album One Hot Minute is by far the most aggro the band has ever sounded, with songs that almost verge on metal in some places.

That wasn't enough to win over the faithful Chili Peppers fans, who were thrilled once Frusciante came back into the fold on Californication at the end of the decade. Given how much Dave could play his ass off on that album though, he was by no mans a bad fit or anything. Hell, there's probably an alternate musical universe where Navarro got the time to write a kickass sequel to One Hot Minute.
