10 Weirdest Rock Songs That Became Hits

9. Hyperactive! - Thomas Dolby

In terms of one hit wonders, Thomas Dolby has one of the most singularly odd careers of anyone in the music business. Even though his hit She Blinded Me With Science feels more like a novelty these days, that hasn't stopped him from being one of the leaders in the ringtone community, jamming with George Clinton, and even playing alongside David Bowie during his performance at Live Aid. When you look at the other tracks in his solo arsenal, it's understandable that he didn't stick around on the hit parade that often.

Coming from the same vein as something like the Talking Heads, Hyperactive! is weird just for the sake of being weird, with some of the most unthinkable effects ever used in a pop song. Though the production of the actual track is indebted to the '80s to its core, there's stuff in this song that feels like it's suited to some sort of cartoon stage production than anything else, like the quirky female backing vocals that sound like a take on nursery rhymes.

And it seemed that Dolby felt the same way too, considering the entire video is basically a fever dream come to life, where he plays the trumpet with his nose and performs with a puppet of himself on his knee. While his first hit may have been closer to Bill Nye science, this is the kind of mad scientist that you'd see in a sci fi movie.
