10 Weirdest Rock Songs That Became Hits

3. Oh Yeah - Yello

Most of the pop charts don't really have the time of day for the avant garde side of music. This is the kind of chart that focuses on the same basic structure of pop songs, so there's no way that some sort of experimental art piece could have a chance next to the pop smashes. There are no rules in pop music though, and if you have something that sticks in the brain well enough, you can put anything on the charts.

Which brings us to the experimental band Yello, who had one of their biggest hits of all time with the song Oh Yeah off the back of its inclusion in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. When you listen to it on its own, it's almost barely a pop song, with most of the lyrics just consisting of those two words in the title and showing some appreciation for the sun and the moon. And that's basically it, with nothing but different mouth sounds to fill out the rest of the track.

This song didn't get by just on its weirdness though...it's about what it means in the context of pop culture. Ever since it came out, this has basically become the soundtrack to every single off-putting kind of desire that you can imagine, with people using it as euphemisms for sex or the more well off side of life. Even if you've never heard the name of this song in your life, chances are you've had that booming bass voice stuck in your head at least once in your lifetime.
