10 Worst Genre Switches In Rock Music History
6. MANIA - Fall Out Boy
The career resurrection of Fall Out Boy in the early 2010's had the rock world divided initially. After making the bold claim that they were going to Save Rock and Roll on their first album after reuniting, the resulting sounds of their next records sounded a lot closer to pop rock than anything resembling the gods of rock and roll. If your attempts to save the genre didn't work though, I guess there's nothing else to do but remove every bit of it from your body.
By the time that FOB started to build up hype for MANIA, fans had reason to be scared with the first single Young and Menace, which turned what could have been a decent chorus into an absolute mess, complete with glitchy production and pitch shifting vocals which sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks getting tortured.
Little did we know that that little bit was only the beginning of the pain on this album, which infuses all of the modern hip hop production in with the traditional emo sounds. Those styles can go hand in hand...you just need to know how to do it right, and these guys really missed the mark by making tracks that sound like they were trying to turn something like Sugar We're Goin Down into a trap song. Punk rock is about defying expectations, but this isn't taking a risk for the sake of being creative. It's desperation when you have nothing left.
