10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The '90s

1. Give It Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a unique aura all to themselves. In the era of grunge, these funk rock heroes were able to work their way up to the top of the rock heap just because their tunes were that damn good. The slinky grooves of Flea and guitar riffs of John Frusciante ended up being so amazing that it's easy to forget that their biggest song might be the dumbest thing to come out of the decade.

Let's be clear though, most of the Red Hot Chili Peppers songs don't need to get by on just lyrics. Although there are great introspective songs like "Knock Me Down" and "Under the Bridge," the draw of the Peppers is for the feel of the track rather than the actual potent lyrics. However, "Give It Away" is a unique case study because of just how much wacky material is in it.

There's a few lines about paying tribute to Bob Marley and "what I got you got to give it to" someone, but the rest of the song feels like Anthony Kiedis filling out the lyrics out with any word that might fit the bill. It's a blast to listen to, but no one's going to question the meaning of "get smart get down with the pow wow." The Red Hot Chili Peppers may be the outliers in the alternative rock scene, but this one track may have gotten them to the top through sheer weirdness alone.
