6. Dutch Uncles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHXxKitLdrU When bands get cited as an influence for someone like Paramore, one can more often than not expect a reasonably heavy rocking sound to be behind the compliment from Hayley Williams and co. But that's not the case with Dutch Uncles. The Stockport 5-piece may have been a source of inspiration for the American's pop-punkers' self-titled fourth album, but their own music is not comparable for the most part. Syncopated rhythms, atypical time signatures, and widening instrumentation are just some of the characteristics of what makes a Dutch Uncles song. Without being hyperbolic, they're rethinking the way that music is constructed in a way that hardly anyone else is. e Comparisons are easily made to Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, and Everything Everything (whom they supported on a 2013 UK tour). But Dutch Uncles' identity as their own band is easily being carved, through the amalgamation of math-rock guitars, funk-laden beats, and electronic wizardry at every turn. Perhaps being overlooked in the 'experimental indie band' category in favour of the likes of Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club, Dutch Uncles remain an underrated treasure waiting to be found for the time being.
