12 '70s Hard Rock Albums All Fans Should Own
3. AC/DC - Highway To Hell
If you had to explain to an alien what rock music was, you’d play them AC/DC, specifically Highway To Hell. They didn’t change up their routine very much over their career, but if you’d nailed a style to the degree they did, you probably wouldn’t mess with the formula either.
You can debate whether this or Back In Black is the better album, but for the purists, this is the one. It’s a superb collection of songs, an abundance of hits crammed onto one 40 minute album with absolutely no filler.
The title track is an all timer, but then you’ve got “Girls Got Rhythm”, “Shot Down In Flames”, one of the all time greats in “If You Want Blood”. The themes don’t deviate from any other AC/DC album - there are fighting songs and philandering songs - but really, you wouldn’t want to hear AC/DC singing about anything else.
Though they’d become a parody of themselves in due course (albeit a charming one), here they’ve got the balance just right - they’re having a laugh, but they’re crafting a seriously great record while they’re at it.
