12 '90s Hard Rock Albums Everyone Should Own
11. Mudhoney - Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
If Alice In Chains defined grunge through their vibe, it’s fair to say Mudhoney did so through their sound. They set out their stall with 1988 EP Superfuzz Bigmuff, named after two preeminent effects pedals of the time, and perfected the vibe on 1991’s Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.
While they never found the same level of fame as some of their Seattle cohorts, Mudhoney’s quasi-slacker rock has aged better than many of their cohorts’ achingly sincere works. This record is front to back fun, with tunes like “Good Enough” that, in the best possible way, wouldn’t be out of place on a teen movie soundtrack.
They stretch things out with the lengthy "Broken Hands", but for the most part this is an album beholden to the proto-punk of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, songs based around catchy hooks and choruses rather than any kind of chops.
Mudhoney continue to release records, and surprisingly decent ones at that, but they’re yet to top this one. Without subscribing to the anguish and sincerity of the grunge scene, it perfectly captures a time and a place - it’s a no-filler blast.
