12 Best Cult Hard Rock Albums Of The 90s
2. One Hot Minute - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Grunge may have been king in the early 90's, but that certainly didn't stop the funk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. On the same day that Nirvana released Nevermind, the Pepper's Blood Sugar Sex Magik rocketed up the charts with hits like "Give It Away." The way that guitarist John Frusciante worked off his bandmates was a fantastic blend of funk and rock that made you want to move.
However, the band's popularity did not sit well with Frusciante, which led him to quit the band mid-tour. After shuffling around for guitarists, the band finally found their man Dave Navarro and released One Hot Minute. Even though the hooks may have been a bit more off-kilter than normal, the album holds up surprisingly well, with songs like "Warped" and "Aeroplane" still rocking with the best of them.
The Peppers may have produced a gem, but the promotional cycle for the record really kneecapped them. With singer Anthony Kiedis relapsing on hard drugs and Navarro becoming more and more strung out, the band cancelled a tour and parted ways with Navarro shortly after. Though things soothed over a few years later once Frusciante returned to the fold, it's still intriguing to think of what a sophomore release with Navarro could have been like.
