12 Best Hard Rock Singers Of The 1990s

3. Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam

Rock was in dire need of a change at the start of the 90's. With hair metal wearing out its welcome and pop rock acts becoming the norm, there was a genuine need for music that had a bit more authenticity. Once the music of Seattle started sweeping the nation, Pearl Jam were one of the few rock bands whose singer could go toe-to-toe with the best in rock.

Compared to the high-pitched squeals of the hair metal acts, Eddie Vedder was a shock to the system with a low-register baritone that had mountains of energy. Though songs like "Alive" and "Even Flow" dealt with fairly heavy topics, it almost didn't matter so long as Vedder unleashed the potential behind his throat. Along the way, the band's experiments with other genres led to Vedder expanding his vocal palette from punk-fueled bangers like "Go" to the open-hearted pain felt on songs like "Daughter" or "Black."

Though Vedder may have mastered the alt rock vocal delivery, that didn't stop many bands like Creed and Nickelback coming to the forefront trying to ape his style. The rock scene has become a bit too concentrated with alt rock yarlers, but one listen to Eddie Vedder will show you what made that vocal style irresistible back in the 90's.
