12 Greatest Classic Rock Singers Of All Time
10. Steve Perry - Journey
Somewhere in between hair metal and 70's hard rock sat mullet rock. Just before Bon Jovi started sweeping and long after Led Zeppelin had faded from view came bands that were concerned with blowing you away with powerful hard rock that predicted the glamour of later bands. Out of all the rock to come from this era came Journey, with a singer whose range was absolutely transcendent.
While the band always consisted of great players, it wasn't until Perry delivered his trademark high notes that fans really started to take notice. Across songs like "Don't Stop Believin" and "Any Way You Want It," Perry set the benchmark for how to blend pop hooks with incredible rock force. He may have been a melody guy first and foremost, but Perry's ability to fluctuate before rock gruffness and squeaky clean precision was something that no other singer has been able to match (though many have tried...and failed.)
Throughout the next few decades, any singer who was looking to take their voice to the next level would often reference Journey songs to test the limits of their voice. Although he might not be with Journey anymore, what Perry gave the rock world has helped push the entire genre up a notch.
