12 Greatest Classic Rock Singers Of All Time
6. Roger Daltrey - The Who
The Who is a brilliant case in great artistic growth. While they started out as just another band in the London club scene, they quickly rose up the ranks to become one of the greatest collectives in rock history. Though each of the members have mastered their field, Roger Daltrey's tenor is what really landed the emotional blow in every track.
Daltrey seems to get pegged as just the singer for the Who, with guitarist Pete Townshend writing most of the tunes and even singing lead from time to time. However, where Roger's strengths lie is in his ability to become a true musical actor in these tunes. Townshend could have easily sang some of the Who classics himself, but the way that Daltrey inhabits the song's story makes them all the more pointed.
Whenever you throw on a track like "Baba O'Riley," you get the impression that his voice is not just singing the words, but actually living in the sonic environment that Townshend has created. With no disrespect to Townshend, absolutely no one would be able to make us feel as good as the final scream of "Won't Get Fooled Again." These Who songs would have been great tunes regardless, but when Roger took them on, they got their beating heart.
