12 Greatest Duos In Hard Rock
6. Ray Toro/Frank Iero - My Chemical Romance
The emo rock sphere gets a nasty reputation for having less than stellar guitar playing. While some bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco were able to have phenomenal singles, their actual prowess behind the six-string wasn't anything too spectacular. No, if you wanted to be blown away by what the guitar could bring to the era of black eyeliner, My Chemical Romance had you covered.
From the first time you see these guys, it's easy to write them off as just another scene band to be forgotten in a few years...but that changes once the guitars come in. Across albums like Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade, Ray Toro and Frank Iero throw down some of the greatest licks of the '00s on songs like "Famous Last Words" and "Welcome to the Black Parade."
As opposed to having a lead and rhythm guitar player, both of these guys are all over the place stylistically. Iero's sound may be more in line with punk with his aggressive delivery, but Toro's rapid scale runs sound like what Brian May would be if he had listened to a lot of Green Day and The Cure. The band's look may be a bit on the edgy side, but any hard rock fan is doing themselves a disservice if they choose to overlook these guys.
