12 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of The '90s
1. Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam
Almost any grunge singer could have made this list based on charisma alone. From Layne Staley's tortured shrieks to the weird aura of someone like Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees, each one of these singers had a certain character to their stage presence that made you unable to look away. However, Eddie Vedder was the only frontman who managed to combine spectacle with the pure outlet of music.
After coming off the loss of Andy Wood, a few surviving members of Mother Love Bone formed Pearl Jam with Vedder at the helm. Though the band's ability to write songs was firmly intact, Vedder was a change of pace with his bellowing low register and intense yarl. Whenever Pearl Jam took to the stage though, Vedder kicked it up a notch by climbing the rafters of whichever venue they played. As Vedder tells it, the only way he could summon the strength to do these daring feats was through the power of the music.
Even after many years of rock and roll and downplaying his celebrity, Vedder continues to bring his unique stage banter to the audience, whether he's barking like a dog on "Spin the Black Circle" or leading an audience singalong on "Better Man." There may have been more glamorous singers throughout the decade, but Eddie Vedder is the one singer that's still in it for the pure love of making music.
