6. Achtung Baby - U2
In the late 80's, U2 felt like a band who could move mountains if they wanted to. With the effects laden guitar of the Edge and the soul shredding vocals of Bono, the band's cries against unjust practices and struggling for human connection resonated with fans across the world. Though many would consider the Joshua Tree as the group's pinnacle, they were planning something much more unusual around the corner.
Seeing the landscape shift beneath their feet, the band remade themselves with Achtung Baby, going from rock and roll's saviors to a cold and calculated imitation of what rock and roll was supposed to be. Many fans would have surely felt the sting of their favorite band changing overnight, but the public absolutely ate it up. Whether they were buying into the new image or in on the joke, Achtung Baby kickstarted a new era for the band, with songs like "One" and "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" calling back to the band's older sounds.
Whereas fans were seeing Bono as rock and roll's newest prophet, the adjustment to the Fly had become too much for some rock hearts to accept. U2 may have lost some along the way, but Achtung Baby launched them into the 90's with all guns blazing.
