12 Most Hated Hard Rock Albums (From Great Bands)
2. Van Halen III - Van Halen
Regardless of timeframe, there seemed to be nothing that could stop Van Halen. Emerging onto the scene with their fun-loving sound, the band laid the blueprint for glam rock before it even hit the Sunset Strip. Even when losing their trademark frontman in David Lee Roth, the band went from strength to strength with Sammy Hagar, whose songwriting contributions gave them even more hits.
Once the 90's came to a close though, Hagar had had enough of the Van Halen brothers and decided to part ways with the group. While it may have felt like an easy fix on paper, the musical timing was not great for the band to search for new singers. The band eventually found their man in Extreme frontman Gary Cherone, but the ensuing album Van Halen III was met with scorn almost instantly.
Instead of building on their showstopping rock sound, the band delves into funkier territory that is way too ill-advised while Cherone's vocals sound like an unflattering Hagar knockoff. The album also features some of the corniest lyrics of the band's career, with words that flow more like word association than having any coherent theme. Van Halen may have felt bulletproof in the 80's, but not even Eddie's great guitar work could save them from this spotty mess.
