12 Most Underrated Metal Albums
2. Entombed - Uprising
Though perhaps best known as the defining band of the first wave of Scandanavian death metal, Entombed have accrued a varied back catalogue that veers wildly through differing metal subgenres. The band quickly moved on from conventional death metal, and by their third album were coining the sound now known as ‘death ‘n’ roll’.
By 2000’s Uprising, Entombed had perfected this blend of harsh vocals, buzzsaw riffs and d-beat drums. It all feels like a culmination of their previous albums’ experimentations, and the band truly sound like themselves for the first time since the early albums. The production is also really sharp, which given that more than a few of Entombed’s records feature some poor technical execution, is a minor triumph.
Like many underrated albums, the easiest way to measure Uprising’s worth is by counting the debt of influence so clearly owed to the album. The whole mid-00’s hardcore/southern rock fusion scene seems to have sprung from Uprising, traces of its DNA can be found in bands such as Cancer Bats, He Is Legend and Every Time I Die, whose guitarist Andy Williams has mentioned the album as a favourite.
The roots of Uprising have travelled far, yet it's never bloomed in the way Entombed’s early work has.
