12 Most Underrated Metal Albums
4. Gorguts - Considered Dead
The Quebec death metal scene is underrated enough in itself, producing quality bands such as Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Despised Icon, as well as Gorguts, the most revered and accomplished of them all. Their 1998 album Obscura is one of the most challenging and uncompromising works of art ever produced in any genre, let alone death metal, and is the shining jewel in their glittering discography.
But their 1991 debut Considered Dead is also close to faultless, deserving of the highest praise possible for it's white-hot, technically-proficient traditional death metal. Playing with all the confidence of an experienced, established band, Gorguts seemed to have already mastered old school death metal on Considered Dead, with its thunderous riffs, note-perfect vocals and evil aesthetic hitting each of its gory targets with ruthless accuracy.
Conspicuously absent from many lists of greatest death metal albums, Considered Dead is a phenomenal achievement, one that would give Gorguts the confidence in their abilities to deconstruct their sound and genre when they came to writing Obscura. For its importance in the development of this iconic band, as well as being a near perfect example of its subgenre, Considered Dead deserves to be recognised as one of the greats.
