12 No-Skip Hard Rock Albums

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

While Red Hot Chili Peppers were inserted into the public consciousness with their 1991 release, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, they solidified themselves as legends with 1999’s Californication.

With the return of guitarist John Frusciante, the essential element to the band’s signature sound was back, and the Chilis were back on top form.

The album begins with popular tracks, Around the World, and Parallel Universe, which allows singer Anthony Kiedis to welcome listeners back into the fray.

Frusciante’s missing ingredient is all over the next track. The seminal Scar Tissue begins quiet and the harmony between bassist, Flea, and Frusciante creates beauty. Scar Tissue’s melodic purity is further emphasised with a heartfelt solo from the returning guitarist towards the end of the track. The song earned the band a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2000.

Kiedis’ vocal prowess dominates Otherside, while the funkadelic feelings of Flea influence Get on Top.

Californication follows and remains the band’s most well-known song besides Under The Bridge.

Chad Smith’s drum skills are put to the test on Easily, and he carries out a hard, steady beat.

The gentle Porcelain combines Kiedis ability to be soft while demonstrating some of his best lyrics.

The following tracks demonstrate the band’s exploration through a range of sounds, which leads perfectly to the final song of the album, the acoustic masterpiece, Road Trippin’.

Road Trippin’ is an appreciation from Kiedis for the return of bandmate Frusciante, while they head out to surf with bassist, Flea. This track is a joyful ode to friendship.
