https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iOj4ETEt4c The fact that any modern hard rock band would bother covering a song like Mexican Radio, which is as weird as it is iconic, is pretty odd. That might explain why Doubledrive didn't make a big deal of it, hiding it in the crevices of their debut album, 1000 Yard Stare. You have to applaud the band for staying as true to the source material as possible, because it would be easy to try and streamline the song too much, removing all of the little peculiarities in the process. But they don't do that. In fact, they seem to relish the overall strangeness of what they're doing, which makes it easier to do as a listener, as well.
