13 Great Songs About Death

7. Frank Sinatra - My Way

Something of a cliché funeral song now, Sinatra's 1969 classic is actually a rehash of a French song called "Comme D'Habitude" (meaning "As Usual") and was written in 1967 by Jacques Revaux, Gilles Thibault and Claude François. This version tells the story of a man observing his marriage collapsing due to the loss of love between the man and his wife. Cheery stuff.

Not one to be out-done though, Sinatra's version with lyrics rewritten by Paul Anka has the man looking back on his entire life, reminiscing with little to no regrets as death quickly approaches. Written for Frank after he began telling friends he was planning on leaving the music industry, the song has become a signature ballad for the Rat Pack member, despite the fact that he hated it. His daughter Tina has gone of record to say "He always thought that song was self-serving and self-indulgent. He didn't like it. That song stuck and he couldn't get it off his shoe."

The success of 'My Way' has led to a plethora of performers covering the song, including Dorothy Squires, Elvis Presley who added it to his live repertoire and Sex Pistol bassist Sid Vicious who gave it a lovely punk rock twist. The karaoke nature of the song is not all good however as performing the song has led to multiple deaths in the Philippines, known as the "My Way killings" (no, seriously).
