13 Problems Only The Smiths Fans Will Understand

2. "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" Is 1 Minute, 53 Seconds Of Utter Heaven

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu4k5sTzxIw Granted, you don't even have to be a fan of The Smiths to understand why "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" is a gift from the musical gods. Coming in at just under two minutes, this song almost strikes you as being a tad short at first - but then it sinks in, and you realise it needn't be longer. So this might well be the most beautifully rendered pop song ever written (that's right - it's a pop song!), and certainly ranks up there with the likes of "God Only Knows." The fact that it was originally released as a B-side seems like pure blasphemy in retrospect; it's beautiful melancholy is unparalleled. As Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand once said: "It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, probably the best reaction you can get from any piece of music." Fans of the Smiths wouldn't argue with his take on the song - no matter how many times you listen to this, its power never diminishes.
