Mercury award winning Scottish outfit Young Fathers defy categorisation. Theyre a musical chimera, made up of a lot of different genres to create a beast thats a little bit of everything. It doesnt seem that theyre likely to stop experimenting any time soon though and you just need to look at their album artwork to realise thats a good thing. Young Fathers have sanded down the edges to their grimier feel from their first few releases injecting a poppier, soul infused sound which feels like a shot of adrenaline to the eyeball. Their most recent endeavour, White Men Are Black Men Too, is intoxicating. You get drunk on the stuff as the subtle beats and lilting vocals swim across the different areas of your brain. Its a melting pot of an album, cherry picking the most interesting and intricate aspects of the musical market stall to create something that you find yourself continually returning to in the wee hours of the morning for your much needed fix. Young Fathers have a cosmic sound, its like theyre trying to bottle a black star. Their songs conjure visions of spinning colour tops and Massive Attack. As a group, Young Fathers are completely fearless and that can only lead to good things. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcRKZkk79-w
