6. Flying Lotus - You're Dead!

Warp

One producer who has continued to impress with his stylistic range and sheer studio know-how is Steven Ellision, a.k.a. Flying Lotus. Founder of the exceptional Brainfeeder label, his music straddles genres with the skill of a gymnast hurtling over a vault.

While hip-hop and jazz dominate as the most obvious influences on many of Flying Lotus's tracks, it's clear within moments of the first track that he's far more interested in taking these established genres and infusing them with experimental electronic production, deconstructing refrains and motifs through the prism of IDM. When it comes to this effortless fusion of styles, You're Dead contains some of Flying Lotus's most imaginative compositions yet.

Throw in Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, and Snoop Dogg as track collaborators and the result is a hugely eclectic mix of tracks which music lovers of all stripes will appreciate for their effortless bombast, ultra-smooth production, and funky grooves.
