10. Tame Impala - Lonerism

Modular Records

Tame Impala founder and front-man Kevin Parker summed up the appeal of their second studio album Lonerism when he said, "On the one hand this album is weird and f***** up, but on the other hand it's very pop." It's this seemingly contradictory blending of catchy melodies with complex instrumental arrangements that makes it so popular and enduring.

Whereas The War On Drugs is reminiscent of '80s rock, here Tame Impala took their sound towards the psychedelia of the 1970s, with Moogs washing in and out, guitar chords wobbling from speaker to speaker as they delay and distort, and Parker's falsetto vocals floating over the top on a sea of filtered reverb.

The results of this fresh approach to production - the trippy synths, guitars, and jazz fusion-style drums of the past combined with modern sample deconstruction - is an album of many highs, not least the second track Endors Toi, which perhaps encapsulates Parker's achievement the most succinctly. Further moves towards electronic production in last year's exceptional Currents mark Tame Impala as one of the most creative bands around.
