15 Greatest Classic Rock Guitar Solos
7. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The final song from The Jimi Hendrix Experience's final studio album, Electric Ladyland, "Voodoo Child" is one of the standout songs of the psychadelic rock genre, and one of Jimi Hendrix's finest moments.
The song is essentially one long, unconfined guitar solo, as Hendrix blazes through a number of different scales, speeds and effects pedals to create one of the most unique rock soundscapes that has ever been put to tape. Bassist Noel Redding, drummer Mitch Mitchell and Hendrix himself are on top form throughout this five minute psychadelic masterpiece.
For those listening for the first time, "Voodoo Child" must seem like quite a strange and confusing listening experience, but Hendrix's talent on the guitar ensures that the song never becomes dull or tedious, and is always fresh and exciting.
Even when played live, Hendrix was able to capture the charged energy of the song with ease. Trying to describe the sound and feel of song is something of a difficult task, as it truly sounds like nothing else that has come before or since, but it still manages to be one of the most exceptional songs of the late 1960's.
The last song from The JImi Hendrix Experience's final album is still one of the most instantly recognisable tracks of their entire musical library.
