15 Greatest Queen Songs Of All Time

7. I Want To Break Free

“I Want to Break Free” was infamous when it was released in 1984, thanks to its controversial music video that featured the band members dressed up in drag as characters from Coronation Street, with Mercury dressed up as a housewife wanting to “break free” from her dull life. That video was even banned by MTV.

Controversy aside, this song has had several interpretations, most famously as Freddie Mercury coming out, but whatever the meaning of the song is, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. All the parts of this song, from the bass line to May's guitar playing (as always) make for a whole that’s hard to not want to dance or sing along to.

If you’re a casual listener and this song sounds familiar, it’s probably because it was featured in a series 4 episode of Sherlock, in which Moriarty listens to it in a flashback sequence.
