15 Things Only Bruce Springsteen Fans Will Understand

10. The Real Meaning Behind Born In The USA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZD4ezDbbu4 A lot of people misinterpreted the title track of Springsteen's 1984 album Born In The USA. The pulsating anthem is one of Bruce's best-known songs but most people don't have a clue what it's actually about. When it was released the immediate reaction was that Bruce had betrayed his beliefs by penning some establishment-loving, jingoistic love letter to America but nothing could be further from the truth. The song is, in fact, an indictment of America's actions during (and the effects of) the Vietnam war. Ronald Reagan even wanted to use his song for his 1984 presidential campaign which Springsteen, the liberal, rebuffed. The song made the general public, some of whom were just getting to know Springsteen, very confused. They thought Bruce was the good kid next door who loved and America and would die for his flag. There's no doubting that Springsteen is a great American, he's just not the type of great American they thought he was.
