When thrash metal innovators Sepultura saw Cavalera leave the group towards the end of 1996 due to internal issues within the band, many fans found the prospect all to hard to digest. It was unclear at that point as to what capacity they would see the bruised Brazilian at in the future.
They didn't have to wait long however before Cavalera unleashed his new core group onto an unsuspecting public, the versatile Soulfly. Fans of Cavalera and Sepultura were now split between the two warring factions, confused as to where their allegiances should lie.
In all honesty this separation still exists with hardcore followers of the two acts, with constant hopes of a reunion in the works however unlikely that may be. The loyal fans of Cavalera however were able to put this aside and appreciate the great work he went on to produce with Soulfly and with his various side-projects.
