It's the oldest cliché in rock - drum solos are the dullest moments in rock shows, usually self-absorbed moments during which the dullest band member shows off his ability to hit things while the rest of the band has a breather. It's usually a good opportunity to head to the bar. Not so during Crüe's tours though. Firstly, Tommy is no ordinary drummer. Influenced by everything from rock to hip-hop, his solos are wonderful genre-bending experiments that utilise both acoustic and electric instruments. The drumming on his solo albums is testament to this. What makes his solos particularly worthy of a look, though, is the Crüecifly. It's effectively a circular rollercoaster onto whose tracks Tommy's kit is attached. As he plays, he's strapped into his chair as he whizzes around the coaster. It's a trick that the likes have Slipknot have done their utmost to copy, but Tommy nails it better than anyone. Before the Crüecifly, he even used to "fly" across the arena from one kit to another using trapeze ropes. Tommy's drum solos, as anyone that has seen the band live knows, are one of the highlights of the Mötley Crüe show.
