15 Things Only Pearl Jam Fans Will Understand

6. The Nirvana Feud Is Way Overblown

Pearl Jam and Nirvana or, specifically, Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain had a bit of a feud going in the early 90s. Well, 'feud' might be a bit too strong of a word for what it really was, which was more of a 'he said, she said' kind of thing. Essentially, Cobain felt Pearl Jam had 'sold out' while he was sticking true to his underground grunge roots.

Ten was released after Nevermind and Cobain felt Pearl Jam were trying to jump on the bandwagon, remarking that they were 'pioneering a corporate, alternative and !*$%-rock fusion'. While he might have been initially contemptuous of Vedder and company, the two frontmen did eventually grow to be friends. Incredibly rare footage from the Pearl Jam Twenty documentary shows Vedder and Cobain slow dancing, talking and laughing during Eric Clapton's performance of Tears in Heaven at the 1992 MTV Awards.

While the mainstream music press wanted to make it into the Grunge Wars, Pearl Jam (and Nirvana) fans know that it was a case of there being a lot of smoke and not much fire. Eleven days after Cobain's suicide, Vedder showed a 'K' drawn close to his heart during Saturday Night Live.
