As has been the case for decades and only made worse with reality TV garbage like X Factor and The Voice, some of the best and most creative music remains hidden and buried under the mainstream chart music. I am not saying mainstream music is bad, merely that so much incredible music goes almost completely unnoticed. Ranging through 1980s Washington D.C.s underground hardcore scene to current Canadian acoustic, and moving through the genres of punk, rap, acoustic and indie-rock, I have compiled a list of 15 artists and bands that deserve more recognition for their work than they receive
15. Be Your Own Pet
Be Your Own Pet were a four piece garage rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. Formed in 2004, they spawned two albums over their four year career, ending with a final show in London, England. BYOP had their own special blend of indie garage rock that packed the punch of punk. Making a rapid name for themselves with their unique style, the band were signed to XL Records in the UK and to Ecstatic Peace in the US, owned by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Due to their young age (The band had to balance touring the US and school) the band toured the US with the help of their parents driving them across the country to make shows and eventually the band played festivals all over the US, UK and Japan. The bands self-titled debut album released in 2006 clocks in at an impressive 33 minutes long despite containing 15 tracks. The album received highly positive reviews from across the board of music reviewers and is still considered by many as the bands best release from their 2 full length LPs and 5 EPs. Over a four year career the band proved their talent and worked hard to make their mark and keep a steady fan following years after their split.
