Be warned: if you haven't jumped on the Vince Staples hypetrain already then you probably should now as it's at its last stop and has no intention of slowing down after that. That's how good the California rapper and his debut album Summertime '06 is.

The west coat rap scene has had a resurgence over the last few years, and Staples seems to be at the forefront of the latest wave of talented word smiths. He's got hint of Ice Cube about him. His lyrics are dark and violent, his attitude is aggressive and he has a penchant for picking out sublime beats to rap over. Tracks like Senorita -- which has an outstanding hook, New Jack City referencing hook from Future on it -- are dark, menacing and unapologetic. The same goes for most of the album but that's what makes it great

Summertime '06 may not make Staples the king of west coast rap, that title and crown belongs to Kendrick Lamar. What it does do though is announce him onto the rap scene in a huge way. Staples is the future and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
