20 Best Metal Albums Of 2017 (So Far)

16. Asira - Efference

If Emperor and Deftones had a bastard son, it son would be Asira. Hailing from Reading, UK, this British quintet is the latest addition to the quickly growing post-metal landscape, mixing despondent yet atmospheric black metal with ethereal dream rock, while also sprinkling in influence from the worlds of pop and even the blues.

Tonally, Asira's mystifying debut, Efference, is all over the map. One second it's a crushing exercise in extreme metal mixed with strained growls, the next it's fuelled by clean guitars and misty singing.

Combine this with progressive songwriting layouts, and you have hands-down one of the most unpredictable records to come out of this year thus far.

I write for Metal Hammer, Prog and WhatCulture. I don’t have Facebook or Twitter, so you’ll just have to call me a stupid cuck to my face.
