20 Devastating Songs About Heartbreak

10. Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdqoNKCCt7A A song for written for a supposedly cheesy teen flick, but what a song and what a good film. If love is a battlefield, this is fighting and asking the other to fight as much as you are, even though part of you knows they probably won't. You may well ask what this song is doing here amongst such esteemed company. Well any song that starts with the line "Won't you come see about me? I'll be alone, dancing you know it..." is worth listening to. And here's the point, songs that truly bridge a generation gap are worth their weight in gold, you just have to look at any Motown song, and some of the lyrics here could have been sung by the Supremes - "Will you walk away? Will you walk on by? Come on, call my name." 'Don't you forget about me' did something lots of other songs of its genre tried to imitate €“ a stadium rock song that everyone could relate to €“ but this song won the day because it added so many layers. It married a perfectly screwed up teen angst film with a perfect pop song that could be sung by anyone from five to a hundred and five years old. It's a lovely addition to the canon of heartbreak songs, hope and wait... and hope and wait some more.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
