20 Devastating Songs About Heartbreak

15. Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzcGs0slGhA This is a song all about acceptance, and compared with some of the other songs here, there's no going back, no matter how much the hero of the story might want to. It was tragic that Jeff Buckley died so young; he'd already taken on his father's mantle as an amazing troubadour and run with it. His one album proper, 'Grace', was all about the language of love, whether that was about his art, his father or the intricacies of the heart and it was outstanding, both in terms of the words and the music. However, where he really came into his own was on his songs of lament €“ he was old beyond his years as a storyteller and this was where 'Last Goodbye' comes in. I could have picked a number of songs from 'Grace', such a 'Lover, you should have come over', but none hit the mark quite like this does. So how does this do acceptance? Well listen to the first line - 'This is our last goodbye, I hate to feel the love between us die, but it's over, just do this and then I'll go, you gave me more to live for, more than you'll ever know.' He's already walking away and knows what it will cost him. But yet... still he can't let go, 'Kiss me, please kiss me, kiss me out of desire, not consolation.' This is a true classic of the heartbreak genre. I can't even begin to imagine how brilliant the songs he never got to write would have been.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
