9. Iris Dement - Infamous Angel

There was an eight year gap between her third and fourth albums, leading some to assume she'd hung her cowboy boots up and left the business. Thankfully, that wasn't the case, as Dement is one of the most talented singer-songwriters of her generation. Her 1992 debut, Infamous Angel, is an album about personal topics such as family, love and small town living. It's all so very charming but at the same time powerful. Dement's voice sees to that; although in the liner notes she claimed to have never thought of herself as a good singer, Infamous Angel is evidence to the contrary. Her voice is certainly unique and raw but poor? Never. The standout song, Our Town, is a near-perfect ode to an idyllic existence we'd all want.
