Recording an album in an American prison in front of an audience of inmates. What a novel idea. It's one that could have only come from, and been pulled off by, the legendary Johnny Cash. The Man in Black had wanted to do the project back in the fifties when he recorded the track Folsom Prison Blues but had to hold off due to personnel changes and his own drug abuse. When he finally did get to fulfil the project, it was worth the wait. It is a raucus, awe-inspiring performance, with Cash's voice as strong as ever and the prison audience hanging on his every word, cheering every anti-authority reference. It was almost as if Cash was one of them, as he sang several prison-themed songs. As well as being a rip-roaring, energetic album, this also marked a turnaround (the first of many) in the career of Cash. Despite limited initial investment from Columbia (who were concentrating their efforts and using their money to promote pop stars), At Folsom Prison was a huge success with audiences and music critics. Cash followed it up with another prison album a year later with At San Quentin.
