1. Steady as She Goes - The Raconteurs (2006)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7aOWIFgIZQ Should you ever meet someone who claims "Rock is dead" and bemoans the state of current music, introduce them to The Raconteurs. This song shows them at the top of their game. Let's analyze the riff, shall we? It begins with a nice drum beat, with a bass being laid in. Finally, Jack White's guitar pops in to top it all off. After this goes on a bit, the singing begins and is carried by the riff the band is playing together. Soon we arrive at the chorus, at which point the song goes into overdrive for the entirety, until the chorus ends. Back to the riff. I know I've used the word "beautiful" often throughout this article to describe things, but I'll be needing to use it once more, because there are few other ways to describe this riff and song. Beautiful. Now, onto a few honorable mentions. Songs that have absolutely fantastic riffs in them, but for various reasons were left out. These Honorable Mentions include... Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple; American Idiot by Green Day; Blood and Thunder by Mastodon; Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith; Hey You by Pink Floyd; Sunshine of Your Love by Cream; and finally Cruel by St. Vincent. I encourage you to look all these songs up. They. Are. Fantastic. And that's all for this time around! Any thoughts on the riffs included, or on other great songs with great guitar riffs?
