5. Enter Sandman - Metallica (1991)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD-E-LDc384 Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. Metallica are now the biggest wusses in rock music, whining about file sharing and stuff. And yes, they had their period with fuzz and wah pedals, but forget about all that! Just focus on the riff in the above song... Awesome, isn't it? A good haunting riff to go along with lyrics about a child's nightmares. Also, whether you like it or not, this was also the song that helped lead them into more mainstream audiences. If you ever hear a DJ on the radio introducing a song from Metallica, 90% of the time it will be Enter Sandman. 4. Smooth - Santana (1999)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXp413NynFk Carlos Santana is an often under-appreciated guitar player. Few people ooze as much talent as he does, and yet are also capable of having their guitar playing take a backseat to the song. Rather than trying to have endless noodling on the guitar dominate the song, Carlos Santana has an amazing ability to play in order to support the song, while also showing off massive skill. Few songs demonstrate this talent as well as 'Smooth', his band's 1999 collaboration with Rob Thomas, whom you may be more familiar with as the lead singer from Matchbox Twenty. Note how the riff is never overdone, yet repeats often throughout the length of the song. This song proved to be a huge success, spending a mind-blowing 12 weeks at number one on the Billboard Charts (with a further 18 weeks in the Top Ten).
