20 Greatest Metal Albums Of All Time

11. Amon Amarth - Versus The World (2002)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_ucAP9tRB4 They try to distance themselves from the term Viking Metal, but Swedish heavyweights Amon Amarth have only themselves to blame - more often than not when the bearded behemoth Johan Hegg is roaring over a melodic death twin-guitar onslaught, it's Odin, Asgard and long, pointy swords he's roaring about. This monstrous sound has never been as focused or effective as it was on 2002s Versus The World; a slower, more deliberate album laced with heavy, doom-like undertones. Previous works had carried a more technical sound, but for Versus things their sound took a down-tuned tone, grinding along a deathly groove - this was infectious metal, cementing Amon Amarth's place among the melodic death heavyweights with its the colossal wall of sound. Like the soundtrack to a battle of the gods, Versus The World is a sword-shaking, shield-bashing piece of work from a band impossible to ignore.

Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
