6. Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves - Aretha Franklin & Eurythmics
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX31fJYHySI Two legendary female singers, Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox, combined on this track to make what is considered a feminist anthem. Tina Turner was apparently Lennox's first choice for the collaboration, but was unavailable, though rumours suggest she turned the opportunity down as the song was too feminist in content. Lennox probably wasn't too put out though, especially considering the song's major success and the authority that Franklin belted it out with. Lyrics such as 'coming out of the kitchen', 'standing on their own two feet' and 'doin' it for themselves' are inspirational ones which united women in the idea that they could gain equality. Remember, the song was released nearly three decades ago, way back in 1985, so it was something of a big deal. Trivia: A fantastic reference to this song came in The Simpsons. Milhouse sang a line from the song while playing with Bart, who happened to be dressed up in drag. Adorable.
