20 Landmark Songs Of The 70s

13. Donna Summer €“ I Feel Love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2q2bis6eLE This is space rock set to a disco beat; Giorgio Moroder applied his electronic styling€™s, with a ridiculously hypnotic rhythm, providing Donna Summer with the platform to tell a story of hedonism, bliss and devotion. What makes this a particularly 70€™s anthem is that it€™s all about the moment; this is the sound of meeting someone for the first time and being immediately seduced with lust and longing. The lyrics are a constant refrain €˜It€™s so good, it€™s so good, I feel love, I feel love€™, giving it a chemical feel, the energy and repetition that the song has would be mimicked by the dance music of the 80€™s and 90€™s and the bass-line would be stolen note for note by Frankie Goes to Hollywood on €˜Two tribes€™ But what made this so golden was the positioning of a soul diva over a dance track, was it disco, funk or electro? Well all and none of them, this was an attempt at creating something that sounded genuinely futuristic, it did just that, and ironically latter day dance music has struggled to match the furious pace this song sets. Drawing inspiration from the hallucinogenic inspired songs of the 60€™s, the power of the torch song singing of Motown, the innovation of instruments and production allowed Donna Summer to unleash an almighty trip, the likes of which had never been heard before and which artists are still struggling to match today. The title says it all.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
