20 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs Of All Time
11. So Sad About Us - The Who
In the mid-60's, The Who were still finding their feet as rock musicians. Even though they already smashed open the rock landscape with "My Generation," their second effort a Quick One was a way to bridge the gap between pop rock and pure roc power. Pete Townshend may have still tested the boundaries on the song "A Quick One," but he still knew how to deliver a killer pop hook.
Just before the title track takes us on a nine-minute odyssey, "So Sad About Us" is about as basic a love song as you can get. Centered around the end of the relationship, this song contains all the melodrama that comes with teenage love gone wrong. This may sound like its beneath the Who's normal paygrade, but the yearning sound of the melody makes it feel like the world could come crumbling down if these two don't get back together.
The Who may have become known for their more epic tracks later in their career, but this song showed that even at their most pop-friendly, they were still better than most. Regardless of what topic they touched, Townshend's songwriting strengths were always in the emotion he brought across, and this song is the ultimate example of his grasp on pop's heart.
