20 Most Underrated Nu-Metal Anthems

2. Pitchshifter – Genius

It may have won a Kerrang! Award for best video upon release, but Pitchshifter’s toxic banger ‘Genius’ doesn’t receive the praise it so rightfully deserves. Why’s it so good? Well, released in 1998, it was way ahead of its time. Through a mix of electronica and nu-metal, Pitchshifter concocted a bizarre brew – one which can still be heard in the works of hard dance acts like The Prodigy and Skrillex.

As for the song itself, it’s a complete mind-melter. Lead singer J.S. Clayden delivers a vocal mantra of “Dysfunction is our function” on top of a sinister guitar refrain, some top notch sampling, and a backbone consisting of a pummeling drum workout. A brain scrambling, vocal splicing chorus takes this one into overdrive, battering the listener’s ears with an insanely intense wall of sound. ‘Genius’ has a very British style and sound, helping to set it apart from the rest of the American-dominated sub-genre.

Talk about underrated – they don’t come much more underappreciated than the ultra-aggressive Pitchshifter. Case and point: ‘Genius.’
