20 Music Videos That Defined The 90s

8. Weezer - "Buddy Holly" (1994)

Weezer 600x300 A stunningly accurate recreation of the popular 70's sitcom "Happy Days", this video pulls the rare trick of creating nostalgia for a show which, in itself, was nostalgia for the 50's. You could probably trace the origin of "nerd culture" back to this clip featuring a decidedly geeky looking, bespectacled band who looked more like computer techs than ladykillers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kemivUKb4f4

7. Eminem - "My Name Is..." (1999)

Eminem 600x300 Who would pick up the mantel of hip-hop king after the unfortunate deaths of kingpins Biggie Smalls and 2pac? As it turned out, it was an unknown skinny blond kid from Detroit, who announced his arrival on the scene with this crudely hilarious video. Eminem effectively made "white rapper" a real thing with this video, erasing the memory of Vanilla Ice from the collective unconsciousness of a generation and creating yet another antihero target for worried parents to obsess about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNPnbI1arSE

Hi there, What Culture-ers! I'm William Graff, a 40-year old freelance writer from the wilds of Capitol Hill in beautiful Denver, Colorado. I enjoy many things such as beer, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, record collecting, stand-up comedy, long aimless walks, and of course the Broncos, which is required by law if you live here. I appreciate all feedback for my writing, but I prefer cash and/or deleted Smiths singles in lieu of praise. Rock on!
