20 Things Only Arctic Monkeys Fans Will Understand
15. The Last Shadow Puppets Need To Release A Follow-Up Album
This doesn't specifically cover the Arctic Monkeys per se, but fans of Alex Turner's songwriting are no doubt eager to see how it translates to other genres. Started as a side-project with good friend Miles Kane, The Last Shadow Puppets were heavily influenced by the work of Scott Walker, with songs like 'Standing Next To Me' swapping the powerful guitar hooks of Turner's main work for generous doses of dreamy nostalgia. If nothing else, it's great to hear Turner's work in an entirely different arena. He and Kane seem to have genuine chemistry as a duo, and they have since hinted that further releases could be on the cards. A steady stream of Arctic Monkeys releases and tour dates has prevented them from delivering on that promise just yet, but it wouldn't be a travesty if Turner took a little time off to continue from where he left off with this particular side-project.
14. The Submarine Soundtrack Shows Another Side To Alex Turner
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0yA0Q1l2jo The Last Shadow Puppets certainly represented a departure for Alex Turner, but it wasn't until two years later that he went it alone. Submarine director Richard Ayoade has directed music videos for 'Fluorescent Adolescent', 'Cornerstone' and 'Crying Lightning', so it stands to reason that Alex Turner returned the favour by recording this enchanting soundtrack in 2010. The six-song release is among Turner's lesser-known work - not that this makes it any less affecting. Like The Age of the Understatement, it's a collection of songs that sounds distinctly wistful, as if lifted from another time entirely. From the sweet 'Hiding Tonight' and 'It's Hard to Get Around the Wind' to the catchy melodies of 'Stuck On the Puzzle', the Arctic Monkeys singer is in a muted, reflective mood as he spins tales of world-weary romance. In short, it's unlike anything else he's ever released.
