10. Because The Night (1978)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcqUSi8QPN0 Because The Night did not appear on a Springsteen album until Live 1975-1985, and a studio version was also included on 2010's The Promise. Bruce originally wrote the song during the Darkness On The Edge Of Town sessions. However, he couldn't quite finish the song. According to Bruce, he wasn't in the right frame of mind at the time to finish it and give it justice apparently, he was frustrated with the incomplete version of the song. The theme of the song (love) was also something that he didn't see fit for his current album. He did, however, perform the song quite prolifically on the ensuing Darkness tour. Nevertheless, he handed the song over to Patti Smith, who of course went on to add some of her own lyrics and score a massive hit single. Supposedly, band mate Stevie Van Zandt was about to strangle Bruce for giving this one away to another artist. He thought it should have been included on Darkness On The Edge Of Town, and he was right. 9. The River (1980)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSpnO6c_McQ As big as the 1970s were for Bruce Springsteen, the 1980s were a time of even greater success. He started out the decade with a double album titled The River. Bruce was an incredibly prolific song writer at the time, and many of the tracks on this album were tracks that he left off of Darkness On The Edge Of Town in 1978. The title track is an all time classic, a song of two young lovers dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Bruce has changed the format of this song live several times over the years, perhaps most famously the version played in 2000 with an extended harmonica intro. It is hard to top the original album version, though.
